Biography

Born in Castro Valley, California, Jean Johnson is an artist exhibiting in over fifty solo, invitational and juried exhibitions at commercial, corporate and art organization galleries. Ms. Johnson’s art is held in private and corporate collections. She exhibits predominately in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions.

The artist works with non-traditional materials. Her new body of work focuses on intricate color pencil designs, at times combined with magnetic elements on metal in order for the art to have an infinite quality of movement. Johnson’s prior body of work involves acrylic on aluminum plate three-dimensional wall sculptures of intense color, some left in their iridescent silver state, and others remaining two-dimensional.

Johnson is a promoter of the arts. She firmly believes that art creation engages the core of human creativity and thought process that can be universally applied to project creation in all fields of endeavor.

Jean strives to build art awareness through her art, education and volunteerism. Along with being an artist, Johnson teaches art having built an award winning art program. She facilitates visiting artist presentations to University and Community College Art Departments; is a public speaker and panel presenter at arts organization, education and radio venues; volunteers for educational and community arts groups.

She is a Robert Rauschenberg Foundation Power of Art recipient that recognizes excellence in Art education and innovative teaching methods. She also earned the distinction of receiving the Lynn Dobson Youth Art Month Award from the Art Educators of New Jersey and the Art Educator Award from the Monmouth County Arts Council.

Johnson earned her Master of Fine Art degree in Studio Art from James Madison University (JMU) punctuated by a graduate teaching assistantship with full tuition waiver and stipend. After graduation, Ms. Johnson served as a JMU Studio Art Adjunct Faculty member. She also served on the adjunct faculty of Brookdale Community College creating a dual-credit High School Fashion program.

Her Bachelor of Art degree is in Interior Design from the University of Kentucky. Johnson also has a Master of Business Administration degree from Florida Institute of Technology.
